Our Journey Since 1980

The Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute (GBPSSI) was established in 1980 as a node in the network of Social Science Research Institutes set up by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, in association with the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Institute was envisioned as a premier center for research into the complex social, economic, and political dynamics of India's most populous state and the broader northern region.

Early Years and Growth

In its formative years, the Institute focused deeply on issues of development planning, rural transformation, and the upliftment of marginalized sections of society. It began advising State and Central government ministries, acting as a critical think tank for policy formulation.

The campus at Jhusi, situated near the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, was acquired and developed to offer a serene environment conducive to high-quality academic work. Over the decades, it expanded to include a rich library, comfortable hostels, residential complexes for faculty, and the renowned Manav Vikas Sangrahalaya (Museum of Human Development).

Transition to a Central University Constituent

A monumental milestone in the Institute's history occurred on July 14, 2005. The GBPSSI became a Constituent Institute of the University of Allahabad, which had recently regained its status as a Central University.

This integration allowed GBPSSI to retain its autonomous research ethos while officially undertaking academic programmes (like the Ph.D., MBA in Rural Development, and MA in Liberal Studies) whose degrees were awarded by the prestigious University of Allahabad.

Present and Future

Today, the Institute continues to expand its horizons. With new research centers like the Kumbh Research Centre, ongoing international collaborations, and an ever-growing corpus of publications, GBPSSI stands at the forefront of social science research in India.
